CATTLE
San Pedro Ranch has a registered cow-calf herd numbering 250 head. The
ranch uses the
Lasater Philosophy of Cattle raising. Bulls are put in with the
cows for sixty days starting in November. This gives the cows from the
beginning of August to the end of September to calve. Any cow failing to breed or
wean a good calf is culled. San Pedro Ranch owns a portion of L Bar 5502
allowing us to artificially inseminate all non-daughters of 5502.
Approximately 35 registered Beefmaster bulls are raised on the ranch each year. These Bulls then go to San Angelo, Texas where they are put on two to three month gain test at Isa cattle company. Laurie Lasater then sells the bulls to buyers around the world.
San Pedro Ranch raises and shows quality Beefmaster heifers. These heifers come straight from the herd and are shown by the owner's children. At the age of two, the heifers are put back into the herd so that the herd does not lose its best genetics.
The ranch follows the Holistic Resource Management system of ranch management. The stocking rate depends on the grass condition, which we monitor regularly. When the grass is growing fast, the cattle are moved through the pasture quickly. When the grass is growing slowly, the cattle are moved slowly through the pasture. We try to prevent erosion by not building roads, and we aerate the land to increase grass yield and animal habitat
